How To Deal With Wedding Song Requests
What is the number 1 wedding song?
We all have that question when planning out the music of the night: should we let our wedding DJ “take guests” song requests? It seems like a simple question but there are a few things you may want to consider before you decide. We have a couple of ideas and solutions to please both you and your guests!
Wedding Song Requests – How to Deal with Them
People love to request wedding songs. Nothing is more thrilling when you’re hitting the dance floor at a wedding and you wanna dance with somebody and the song YOU requested comes on, and you start pulling the moves on the dance floor like a dancing queen. And seeing other wedding guests flock to the dance floor to enjoy it.
However, this can get extremely awkward if you know there will be one or two people who will likely request a song that will completely kill the vibe you’re after. You don’t want your wedding DJ having to change that amazing song that’s a hit on the radio to something that no one really wants to hear!
Your guests might want to dance to fun wedding reception songs. They might want dance songs or hip-hop songs from artists like Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, or even Justin Timberlake. Almost every wedding DJ knows a few requested wedding songs and has them ready. But you need to ask some questions before your DJ starts getting those requests.
The questions you need to ask yourself are:
- How flexible do you want your soundtrack to be?
- How much do you trust the audience (guests) on your wedding day?
Will one of your guests be upset if the DJ can’t work their song into the mix to maintain the appropriate wedding atmosphere?
What is a good wedding exit song?
This is a really great question because there are so many good songs that can be the exit song.
Some popular songs for an exit song can be “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves, “I Gotta Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas, “Don’t Stop Believin'” by Journey. Those are just a few examples of popular wedding exit songs.
What about a wedding first dance song?
Just like for the exit songs there are many good first dance songs. Some popular first dance songs include “At Last” by Etta James, “Your Song” by Elton John, “Marry Me” by Train. Again this list could go on forever with the amount of great first dance songs.
How often should you play a slow song at a wedding?
We think you should play at least one slow song so your guests can take the time to congratulate the newlyweds. The wedding is a time for all of the guests to come together and celebrate a new beginning. While you should definitely play fast songs, it’s also important to give people a chance to see their friends and family members who they maybe don’t get to spend much time with on a regular basis.
So we think one slow song would be fine but we’ve seen some DJs that play them back to back. No thanks!
What song do the bride and groom walk out to?
If you want to provide a specific wedding atmosphere, you may want to ask your DJ to play a wedding playlist and stick to it, in which no requests are allowed – No if’s and’s or buts!
Another option is to use our Airwaves Music playlist tool, which gives your guests a chance to request songs they want to hear but allows you to give the final say in which their song choices are accepted or tossed from the playlist.
All in all, it’s your day and your DJ will play what YOU want to hear – but it’s always nice to have a little help from your family and friends about what might keep that dance floor packed!
